Trust in God by Griffin rain

Trusting in God often means trusting in other people even when it may not seem like the best idea from our perspective. Oftentimes when we are evangelizing with the cross, I'll ask one of the people that we were evangelizing if they know a good area for placing the cross so that it will remain in that area for a long time to remind people of the love that God has for them. I found that the nicer the areas, the more quickly the crosses get taken down if they're not somewhere that's difficult to take down such as in a tree. Even in a tree in nice areas, they often get removed very quickly. Over a month ago, I asked a homeless person while I was in a pretty nice part of town if he knew a good spot where I could put the cross. He told me that I should put it right next to a tree on a very prominent intersection. I thought for sure that the cross would be gone by the end of the day especially since it had a pretty strong Bible quote painted on it from Wisdom 2:21, "their wickedness blinded them." I was tempted to put it in the tree itself, but I decided to just put it where the man had told me. That cross stood there on that corner for about a month. This kind of blows my mind, as this was a nice area and very heavy foot traffic. This also shows how God is working through our obedience even when it seems like this is not the best thing.

This reminds me of Gamaliel, the Jewish teacher of the law when he says in Acts 5:38-39

Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

If something is a merely human act, it will fail, but if it is from God then it will last. We can want to try to make things the most attractive by human standards, but it will still fail if it is not of God. We know that Jesus has already won and it is not as if we are being obedient to someone that is leading us astray. In fact more often than not if we follow our own will we will go astray. The virtue of obedience is so necessary for us as it often means going against our own will in order to do God's will and that is the best thing for us.

For men trying to grow in this virtue, I encourage you to attend this Friday's men's discipleship night. This Friday, we will have Father John LoCoco coming to offer formation on the virtue of obedience.

About the Missionaries of the Real Presence

The Missionaries of the Real Presence aims to assist in the apostolic renewal of the church by intentionally discipling men living in community and encouraging missionary vocations in the church. We participate in Christ’s evangelizing work for the salvation of souls especially seeking out those who have been spiritually neglected. We introduce people to Jesus through intentional conversation, preaching, teaching, and prayer. We engage in direct evangelization in the public forum on the city streets, on public transit, in homes and share the good news of Christ with those we meet. All of this flows from a life of prayer and union with Jesus as our source.
